Lab-grown and natural diamonds: what to compare

Lab-grown and natural diamonds have different origins. When choosing jewelry, it helps to separate that distinction from the quality of the stone and the design of the setting.

Are they both diamonds?

Yes. Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. They are different from diamond simulants such as moissanite and cubic zirconia. Read GIA’s comparison.

Can you tell by looking?

Appearance alone does not reliably establish a diamond’s origin. A gemological laboratory uses testing to identify natural or laboratory-grown material. Ask for independent documentation rather than relying on a visual comparison.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

The two main commercial methods are high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Both grow diamond in controlled conditions. The method alone does not establish the finished stone’s quality. GIA describes the growth processes.

Does every laboratory use the same grades?

No. Report services and terminology differ. Check the laboratory, report scope and current service description. GIA’s qualifying loose lab-grown diamonds receive Premium or Standard quality assessments; other reports may present different information. See GIA’s current services.

What should I compare when shopping?

Compare the actual diamond information alongside the setting, metal, proportions and fit. Check the price of the complete piece and what is included. Production time, return conditions and ongoing care can also affect your choice.

Do lab-grown diamonds need different care?

Care should follow the finished piece’s materials, setting and condition. Clean gently and protect the setting from impacts. Read our jewelry care guide and ask before using an ultrasonic cleaner.

What does Lamora use?

We use lab-grown diamonds in designs made to order in 14K yellow gold. Our selection standard is E color and VS2 clarity or better. Every piece includes an independent laboratory diamond certificate identifying the issuing laboratory and the stones covered by the report.

The gold forms, open spaces and stone placement are central to each design. Find a piece you want to wear.
