How to clean and care for diamond jewelry

Daily wear leaves oils and residue on jewelry. Gentle cleaning helps the stone catch light again, while a few habits protect the gold and setting.

Clean with mild soap and warm water

Use warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft-bristled brush. Work gently around and beneath the setting, rinse well and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid toothpaste, bleach, chlorine cleaners and abrasive powders.

Check the setting first. If a stone moves or something feels loose, stop wearing the piece and arrange an inspection before cleaning it.

Take jewelry off before rough work

Remove pieces for the gym, swimming, heavy cleaning, gardening and contact sports. Put jewelry on after perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hairspray. These habits reduce exposure to chemicals, residue and hard knocks.

Store each piece separately

Use separate pouches or compartments so jewelry does not rub together. Keep pieces dry. When traveling, secure them in a jewelry case or wrap them individually in soft cloth.

Let a professional check a changed setting

A stone that shifts, a clasp that feels loose or a setting that starts catching needs attention. Stop wearing the piece and contact a jeweler. Do not push a stone back into place or attempt to tighten the setting at home.

Ask before using an ultrasonic cleaner. The setting, any treatments and the condition of the piece determine whether it is suitable.
